Description
The key objective of the Phase II Sequential project is to develop and demonstrate a fully-autonomous, large-scale hydrogen recovery and compression system that can be used as a modular building block to reclaim and compress a substantial portion of SSC’s hydrogen. Specific goals for the Phase II Sequential program effort are: Improve in-cell and stack water management, along with flow distribution between cell stack assemblies, to advance autonomous operation of the HECS Increase hydrogen recovery from about 83% to >95% These objectives will be accomplished through the upgrade of the existing system that will subsequently be returned to SCC at the conclusion of the Phase IIE effort
Benefits
One of the several NASA application of Skyre's electrochemical hydrogen compression system is the recovery of liquid hydrogen (LH2) boil off from cryogenic hydrogen storage vessels. Another application for H2RENEW is the separation of helium purge gas from hydrogen used in launch operations. Skyre’s H2RENEW can separate the hydrogen out leaving high purity helium that can be re-used, thereby reducing NASA’s helium usage. The customer for hydrogen removal from helium is Stennis Space Center and other launch operations at KSC and MSFC.
H2RENEW™ electrochemical hydrogen separation and compression systems can be used for industrial hydrogen recycling in applications such as metals heat treatment, and for hydrogen energy applications such as compression of hydrogen for fueling fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) and energy storage and for separation and compression in the production of hydrogen from natural gas.
