Oxidation Resistant C/C Composites

Description

Cornerstone Research Group Inc. proposes to advance the state-of-the-art in oxidation resistant carbon/carbon (C/C) composites by combining recent advances in z-stitching technology and a CRG proprietary resin system called MG Resin. The utility of MG Resin is being explored through funding with various government agencies for a wide range of applications including hot structures, thermal protection systems (TPS), and an elastomeric formulation for rocket motor insulation. Addressing the need for affordable hot structures, MG Resin has proven to be an excellent material for replacing legacy pitch and phenolic resins in the production of C/C composites. The MG Resin chemistry is highly tailorable and is compatible with both liquid infusion and prepreg processing. During carbonization it forms a strong char with very high yield (>70%), and is able to produce C/C composites with densities greater that 1.6 g/cc within two PIP densification cycles. Reducing the number of densification cycles reduces the total lead time to produce a part, which directly correlates to a massive reduction in cost due to the labor savings. CRG has demonstrated this lead time reduction by fabricating fully dense C/C using 3D woven preforms in two weeks. When this time savings is combined with the enhancements to mechanical performance offered by z-stitching and oxidation resistance afforded through higher temperature capable coatings and densification using Si-containing MG Resin formulations, C/C of superior quality will be produced in less time and at a lower cost than the current state-of-the art. This technology will bring much needed relief to an overburdened industrial base trying to support both space-based and hypersonic vehicles.
