The objectives of this study are to adapt an existing JPL dewar and electronics for use with the STA device for observation at Palomar using an existing array (expected to have delta doped detectors produced with the MBE RTD), characterize and calibrate the performance of the array and the camera system in the laboratory (iterate), deploy to Palomar for a test run (first light check), and optimize devices and dewar configuration based on feedback.
Delta doped CCDs are unique in the combination of high QE over a wide spectral range and absolute stability. High detector sensitivity and stability are essential in achieving the science goals in mission concepts currently under development. An on-sky validation is required to earn widespread credibility and potentially for delta doped detectors to be a contender for example for PTF2 (Palomar Transient Factory). Deploying a high efficiency NUV-NIR delta doped thick CCD for on-sky observation at Palomar and demonstrating potentially new and exciting science will go a long way in establishing credibility with the astronomy community.
