In this new IRAD effort, we will specifically aim to develop a “hybrid” frequency reference that is required for the next-generation mass change mission, in order to replace bulky optical cavity and to fit into much smaller platforms such as CubeSats. Our ultimate goal is to develop a~2U size laser system that achieves the required absolute and relative optical frequency stability for the compact laser ranging system.
This technology would enable precision laser measurements for missions with finite payload volume, such as CubeSats and UAVs. It can also be applied to other applications including coherent ranging and communications.
