Description

The objective is to develop a novel AM and composite technology to fabricate prototype lightweight mirror assemblies for spaceflight hardware.

Benefits

AMs and composites have superior mechanical properties and processing ability that are unique among all metal alloys due to their amorphous morphology - will lead to stronger and lighter parts. Specific to mirrors, AMs have the ability to be cast into both the mirror surface (to a specified tolerance) and the backing all in one step, which may greatly reduce mirror cost and allow athermalization of instrument benches. Applicable to optical instruments and missions (Spectrometers, Exoplanet Instruments).
