Characterization of the CUVIS spectrometer (CUVIS)

Description

In this effort, we will focus on electrical and optical performance characterization (180-1050 nm) at the focal plane assembly (FPA) level, using a NUV-NIR Teledyne space-qualified CMOS image sensor and our custom FPA developed in a prior IRAD effort. Then characterization and instrument level response of the fully assembled Compact UV-Visible Imaging Spectrometer (CUVIS) breadboard instrument will be completed.

Once developed, such cameras enable a wide range of missions [CubeSat, SmallSat, Discovery, New-Frontier], on various types of instruments [e.g. CUVE UV spectrometer for Venus, TR-RAFS Raman spectrometer for the Moon, ICE-uProbe or Europa Lander, surface reflectance measurement for the Moon or asteroid or icy satellites, comet coma composition, planetary aurora, asteroid surface composition and structure, non-LTE processes of Mars or Jupiter, and study of plume from Europa and Enceladus]. The same sensor could also be used as part of a navigation or star tracker system. With potential sensitivity extending down to 110 nm, a detailed characterization will also make CIS115 a strong contender as a LUVOIR focal plane. This work also directly supports efforts to include CUVIS as a TDO addition on the DIVINCI+ Discovery mission.
