Increasing Fidelity for Lunar Sample Collection

Description
Honeybee is working with Masten Space Systems to increase fidelity for lunar sample collection to ensure that results are as impactful as possible when testing new innovations, such as the PlanetVac regolith sample collector. Masten will install a diffuser screen to better understand how plume scouring and thermal effects of the vertical takeoff and vertical landing vehicle affect sample collection. Testing will also involve a new high-fidelity regolith simulant designed to create realistic landing conditions. The goal is to use the information gained through this experiment to develop better designs for regolith sample collection technologies. Problem Statement PlanetVac is a regolith sample collection device developed for use on extraterrestrial landers. Before the device can be used in lunar or other missions, researchers must achieve risk reduction through various tests, improving outcomes through iteration. The fidelity of PlanetVac’s hardware must be demonstrated under relevant thermal and sample collection conditions, enabling it to be refined for future missions. Technology Maturation With the technology currently at TRL 5, a successful demonstration will show feasibility of this new configuration for sample collection systems on a rocket-powered vehicle. This would accelerate the technology’s ability to be used on the lunar surface, improving schedule fidelity. This work is a continuation of previous flight testing under T0179 and relates to T0226.
Benefits
This testing reduces risk by providing an operational flight experience and informs technology development by more accurately simulating the lunar environment. By replacing the solid deflector with a screen, researchers expect to better control the rocket plume. Overall, this benefits future NASA missions and the commercial space industry.
