High Performance Cathodes for the Co-Electrolysis of Carbon Dioxide and Water Project

Description
Initiate the development of an improved solid oxide cathode for the electrolysis of CO2 and H2O gas mixtures. Proposed work is to fabricate small scale "button" cells with ceria-based cathodes and test under polarization conditions. This proposed work is fabricate "button" with cathodes of 2-3 different ceria-based compositions. The cells will be tested in a mixed gas CO2–H2O-H2 atmosphere perform both impedance and polarization measurement to characterize the performance.
Benefits
This technology would also offer mass savings for a more near-term unmanned Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission, boosting the amount of the regolith sample(s) that could be returned. The technology would also be synergistic with an unmanned Mars Hopper concept proposed by fellow GRC researchers in another CIF proposal, allowing a wider mobility range for surface science than SOA unmanned rovers.
