Description

Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) is a game changing new technology that must be understood before it can be effectively used as a manufacturing option. This project will enable engineers and scientists at GSFC to use the DMLS process in an efficient and productive way. It will also facilitate the development of novel designs that were previously considered impractical or even impossible. The technology can also be used to reduce manufacturing costs of complex parts.

This project involves investigation of the DMLS technology through the design and procurement of parts to be made using this particular 3D printing process. Primary objectives include the following: - Investigation of the intricacies of DMLS process including: o Dimensional accuracy o Major cost drivers o Properties vs. bulk material o Quality vs. vendor - Development of a guide/manual detailing DMLS technology - Hold luncheons at GSFC to enhance DMLS exposure to engineers and scientists GSFC Collaborators: Israel Moya Harvey Mosely Keith Gendreau Scott Porter Takashi Okajima

Benefits

The DMLS technology allows for the additive manufacturing of near net parts that cannot be made via traditional processes. This includes conformal cooling channels, “organic” supporting structures, as well as complex internal geometries.
