Advanced Lithium Sulfur Battery

Completed TRL 6 (started at 5, targeting 6)

Description

Cornerstone Research Group Inc. (CRG) proposes to continue efforts developing lithium metal anode based offering NASA the ability to increase battery energy density to 300-400 Wh/kg for electric aircraft and space applications. This innovation is enabling for electric aircraft and space exploration, specific technologies being developed and demonstrated enable lighter weight battery designs with improved safety for application in Urban Air Mobility (UAM), electric powered aircraft systems, space rovers, landers and EVA systems. The battery cell can be further improved by incorporation of the NASA technologies being developed in collaboration with the NASA CAS SPARRCI program led out of NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC). This Phase II Extended (Ph II-E) effort will build on CRG’s base Phase II efforts that has achieved technology readiness level 5, and compliment NASA’s other investments in electric powered aeronautics with electric aircraft specific battery material, component, and cell designs that make initial steps toward scaled production. CRG’s proposed approach to further develop high specific energy batteries for in electric powered aeronautics and space systems will provide NASA with a battery cell at technology readiness level (TRL) of 6 at the conclusion of the Ph II-E effort that can be used as a baseline cell for testing the CAS SPARRCI technologies. Successful completion of the Ph II-E effort will result in a battery cells ready for battery pack integration and demonstration a NASA program office providing investment and Phase III transition opportunities for the CAS SPARRCI project.

How to get involved

This is early/mid-stage (TRL 6) — the most realistic path in is NASA SBIR/STTR, which funds small businesses and research institutions to develop technology aligned with NASA's needs (equity-free, phased funding). Check whether a current SBIR/STTR solicitation topic overlaps with this project's technology area, or contact the project directly (above) to ask.

None of these are guaranteed paths for this specific project — TechPort itself doesn't have an "apply" button. Reaching out to the contact(s) above with a specific question is usually the fastest way to find out what's actually open.
