Diamond-like Coating Assessment for Reduction of Thruster Erosion (DCARTE-ACO)

Completed TRL 5 (started at 4, targeting 5)

Description

Validation of a new, lightweight, coating material for solar array interconnects that can reduce erosion from electric propulsion thruster plumes that will increase the reliability and decrease the cost of solar arrays for long duration, high-power solar electric propulsion missions.

Benefits

Electric propulsion thruster plume erosion rate lower than that of the current standard Room Temperature Vulcanized (RTV) CV-1142 at Xenon ion energies between 250 and 600 eV and angles between 0 and 60 degrees.A coating that adheres to Kovar (solar cell interconnect material) and remains adherent during exposure to electric propulsion thruster plume at Xenon ion energies between 250 and 600 eV and angles between 0 and 60 degrees.

How to get involved

This is early/mid-stage (TRL 5) — the most realistic path in is NASA SBIR/STTR, which funds small businesses and research institutions to develop technology aligned with NASA's needs (equity-free, phased funding). Check whether a current SBIR/STTR solicitation topic overlaps with this project's technology area, or contact the project directly (above) to ask.

None of these are guaranteed paths for this specific project — TechPort itself doesn't have an "apply" button. Reaching out to the contact(s) above with a specific question is usually the fastest way to find out what's actually open.
