MAG4 is a unique solar-activity forecasting capability developed at Marshall for operational use by the Space Radiation Analysis Group (SRAG) at JSC. MAG4 is a fully automated tool that downloads SDO/HMI magnetograms, identifies strong magnetic field areas on the solar disk, measures magnetic field parameters, and from those parameters and derived forecast curves makes forecasts of expected event rates and likelihood of occurrence of large solar flares (M and X class, Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), fast CMEs, and Solar Proton Events (SPEs). The forecasts are made in near real time, with new forecasts made every 24 hours. Work to increase accuracy, robustness, reliability, and use and operational transition of MAG4 continues at Marshall.
