Description

The task will be accomplished by defining a release strategy reached by agreement among the VESGEN development team and the Ames Software Assurance (SWA) and Legal Intellectual Property Offices. The pre-production code will undergo beta testing by several biomedical research laboratories. The production code will be delivered to the Ames Software Release Office. Concurrently, computer scientists are working with biomedical scientists for advances in: (1) more automated extraction of vascular patterns by supervised ‘deep’ learning methods of artificial intelligence, and (2) further algorithmic transformation to 3D vascular analysis.

Benefits

The primary objective of this task is to complete final development and first public release of NASA’s VESsel GENeration Analysis (VESGEN) 2D software. The current beta-level VESGEN 2D software is globally requested by biomedical researchers for head-to-toe applications to vascular-dependent diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and wound healing. Applications of VESGEN include vascular remodeling within 2D microscopic and clinical images of tissues such as the retina, heart, and intestine. The automated vascular analysis has been applied successfully to terrestrial and astronaut health challenges. NASA Stakeholders for the task include the Human Research Program and Vascularized Tissue Centennial Challenge. Secondary objectives of the task are technical advances in: (1) the automated extraction of binary (black/white) vascular patterns and (2) algorithmic transformation to 3D vascular analysis.
