Precision Image Based Wavefront Sensor for LUVOIR

Description

We propose to develop the high-level specifications for an image-based wavefront sensing instrument for a post-decadal survey LUVOIR-type mission. Such an instrument could remove the need for the edge sensors and laser metrology system in the current concept and enable closed loop image-based control.

Benefits

In the context of LUVOIR-like future missions, a phase retrieval-based wavefront sensing instrument could remove or reduce the need for two technologies: segment-to-segment edge sensors and a laser metrology system monitoring the secondary mirror. This would reduce risk and technical complexity and thus cost. Also, directly measuring optical performance reduces the risk of unsensed drifts or creep between a physical reference (like an edge sensor) and the mirror surface. The picometer wavefront control capability this contributes to is an enabling technology for the LUVOIR concept.
