Laser Metrology Edge Sensor Concept Study for LUVOIR

Description

We propose follow-on development for photonic integrated circuit (PIC) that includes all essential laser metrology functions necessary for active alignment of multi-segmented telescopes represented by LUVOIR. This work would focus on packaging and testing developed PIC from our FY22’s IRAD/CIF or a PIC deliverable from an in-house ACT LIDAR project through collaboration. The performance of these PICs would be evaluated by frequency stabilization with gas cell, phase locking between two lasers and laser metrology demo. These results would be compared with commercial lasers running the same tests to evaluate PIC edge sensor feasibility.

Benefits

LUVOIR is our primary targeted customer, but any other segmented mirror telescope missions where precise metrology alignment is needed would benefit from this work.
