Completed TRL 5 (started at 3, targeting 5)
This project will continue to advance the Autonomous Deep-space navigation capability applied to Autonomous Rendezvous and Docking (AR&D) GNC system by testing it with on-orbit imagery hardware, particularly in a flight processor, with a goal of limited testing in IPAS with the ARCM (Asteroid Retrieval Crewed Mission) DRO (Distant Retrograde Orbit) AR&D scenario.
Orion GN&C engineers are working on this project and see Visual Odometry as an attractive option for Orion's future primary AR&D sensor. This technology fits seamlessly with any mission contained in the exploration architecture that is being considered by NASA. An effort is also underway to explore using this technology for visiting vehicle monitoring at the ISS.

This is early/mid-stage (TRL 5) — the most realistic path in is NASA SBIR/STTR, which funds small businesses and research institutions to develop technology aligned with NASA's needs (equity-free, phased funding). Check whether a current SBIR/STTR solicitation topic overlaps with this project's technology area, or contact the project directly (above) to ask.
None of these are guaranteed paths for this specific project — TechPort itself doesn't have an "apply" button. Reaching out to the contact(s) above with a specific question is usually the fastest way to find out what's actually open.
