Goggle based Visual Field Device for SANS

Description

The Goggle based Visual Field (GBVF) device is intended to detect, monitor progression, and guide medical interventions of severe Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) cases during expeditionary spaceflight. Approximately 70% of long-duration crewmembers present with one or more signs of SANS. Until effective countermeasures are discovered, SANS represents short- and long-term risks to astronauts and operations during any long-duration spaceflight, regardless of location: ISS, cislunar, Lunar Gateway, lunar surface, or Mars.

Benefits

Year-2 IRAD funding (FY21) will permit the Goggle-Based VF (GBVF) device to: (1) complete clinical validations to ensure its performance is comparable to large-scale COTS visual field devices and (2) complete initial operational testing via space analog(s) to optimize the device's user interface, test protocol, software, usability, and ability to perform under semi-autonomous conditions.
