CC21 Real Time Cognitive State Determination System
Completed
Description
Astronauts will need to carry out autonomous operations as they venture beyond Low Earth Orbit. For many of the activities that the astronauts perform, the same training is provided to everyone months ahead of time. A system that provides customized training ahead of mission, just-in time training, or real-time operations support that is optimized and tailored to each astronaut's psychophysiological state at the time of the activities would significantly improve operations.
It is important to provide astronauts with the best training and real-time operations support tools. As missions move away from near-Earth orbit to Lunar and subsequently Mars missions, the ability to carry out autonomous activities becomes critically important. Having the absolute best training for these types of missions is important for improving human spaceflight operations. NASA seeks a system that provides real-time operations support that is optimized and tailored to each astronaut's psychophysiological state at the time of the activities and which can be used during training leading up to the mission. Benefits
This project created a set of real-time algorithms that correlates a person's bio-streams to a person’s cognitive workload, while meeting the system performance requirements. The solutions contain pre-processing algorithms that transform the data from their “raw” state to something that can be ingested by the correlation software. Additionally, one final solution was enhanced to accommodate reduced sensor input in the event sensors drop off during events.

How to get involved
This is a mature technology (TRL 7+) — the realistic path in is usually NASA's Technology Transfer Program: licensing an existing NASA patent, or a Space Act Agreement to use NASA facilities/expertise directly. NASA also runs a startup licensing program with no upfront fee for companies formed to commercialize a specific NASA technology.
None of these are guaranteed paths for this specific project — TechPort itself doesn't have an "apply" button. Reaching out to the contact(s) above with a specific question is usually the fastest way to find out what's actually open.
