This proposal addresses NASA Technology Roadmap TABS 8.2 Observatories. The research objective is to improve the resolution of imaging systems by advancing adaptive control techniques for disturbance rejection. For lightweight structures in the space environment, the structural dynamics and disturbance spectrum are typically uncertain due to modeling limitations and unknown changes. Adaptive control can improve the imaging resolution of these systems by adapting to the actual structural dynamics and spectrum of onboard and ambient disturbances. The proposed research focuses on three key challenges that can enhance the achievable performance of adaptive disturbance rejection, namely, unmodeled nonminimum-phase zeros, disturbance aliasing and modal folding, and nonlinear dynamics of joints.
