Field Programmable Short Wave Infrared Photodetectors

Description

SK Infrared is proposing an SBIR Phase II Extension Option (Phase II-E) to advance the development of state-of-the-art in short wave infrared (SWIR) detectors based on pin mode and linear mode avalanche photodiodes (PIN-APD) to meet NASA’s needs for advancements in beaconless pointing and star tracking technology. To transition and mature this technology from the research conducted in Phase I and Phase II, SK Infrared will develop a mid-format focal plane array (FPA), by refining the heterostructure epitaxial design developed in the Phase I and II of the SBIR project. We will use commercially available manufacturing resources, scaling the technology from the small format 4x4 mini-array to a mid-format focal plane array (FPA) of 320x256 pixels integrated with an imaging readout integrated circuit (ROIC).

An imaging array for beaconless pointing as part of the Integrated RF and Optical Communication (iROC) development effort at NASA. High operating temperature, high sensitivity detector for quantum key distribution (QKD), as one example of quantum communications. Dynamic imaging array for short-wave lidar and atmospheric gas monitoring.
