ANTCity a PaaS for AAM and Urban Planning
Completed
TRL 6 (started at 3, targeting 6)
Description
In 2010 our passion for 3D gaming engines, along with our experience in human-machine interfaces (HMI) for industrial automation systems, pushed us to unite both worlds, game engines with real-world applications. Since then, we have worked with the Unity game engine for topics related to “serious games.” Unity met our simulation and Digital Twin needs in performance and connectivity, help from the developer community, and support. With traffic and commute times increasing, there will be increasing demand and a market for alternative transportation methods. Answers that extend beyond the prevailing model for manned aircraft services to promote shared situational awareness and collaboration among operators are needed. The ideal product is a fully automated Air Traffic Control planning platform as a service (PaaS) that requires customers and aircraft routes, weather mapping, target delineations over a limited number of airports, vertiports and vertihubs. We propose a PaaS that creates a Digital Twin and Synthetic Environment for 10km^2 of a given city procedurally. We can overlay actual and simulated data from the city (e.g., weather, tree, infrastructure, powerlines, traffic). Stakeholders will be able to use the system to simulate weather data and multimodal transportation system interactions for up to 42,000 independent agents.
Benefits
Framework for large-scale Simulation, Testing, and Validation of multimodal transportation for a city-wide system Digital Twin (DT) City for Urban weather sensing Infrastructure testbeds and 3D representation for AAM AAM Tool for 3D real-time visualization and Simulation for Community Integration Framework for Data ingestion, assets localization, rt-routing, automated traffic control for multiple stakeholders.
City Manager or Urban planner tool to show data in real-time to understand better the city goals of different stakeholders Platform as a Service (PaaS) - for Smart Cities and City Digital Twin (DT) for IoT Air Traffic Control (ATC) Services for AAM (Simulation / RT3D Visualization) PaaS - City DT and Smart Highway DT for infrastructure operators and municipal services companies

How to get involved
This is early/mid-stage (TRL 6) — the most realistic path in is NASA SBIR/STTR, which funds small businesses and research institutions to develop technology aligned with NASA's needs (equity-free, phased funding). Check whether a current SBIR/STTR solicitation topic overlaps with this project's technology area, or contact the project directly (above) to ask.
None of these are guaranteed paths for this specific project — TechPort itself doesn't have an "apply" button. Reaching out to the contact(s) above with a specific question is usually the fastest way to find out what's actually open.
