Testing of Geopolymer Binders in Rocket Plume Environments

Description

The objective of this research project was to test a new generation of multi-function alumina-silicate based cementitious binders capable of high reflectance, low ablation rate, elevated corrosion resistance, and high mechanical strength. The present work built on previous research undertaken by the research team in the areas of geopolymer binders, high reflectance materials, and computational chemistry of materials behavior in high temperature environments. Full scale and laboratory controlled tests were performed to compare geopolymer performance to commercial products.

The potential impacts of this technology in a rocket engine testing structural setting, was that geopolymers enabled an improved refractory capability in high temperature and high thrust environments where erosion rates are high
