Description
The main objective of this project, in partnership with a commercial partner, was to evaluate the potential use of wicking materials for designing smart thermal management systems. The ultimate use of these smart thermal management systems would be in the control and storage of low-viscosity cryogens, such as hydrogen or helium.
Benefits
This technology has the potential to impact the handling of cryogens in all types of applications, ranging from thermal management of instruments by advanced cryogen heat pipes to the advancement of medical imaging equipment such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Applications such as cryogenic propellant refueling depots have been suggested. The use of these coatings/materials could greatly reduce cooldown times, life cycle costs, and system complexity, thereby saving time and reducing costs.
