The ASEnTS testing technology would enhance NASA and GRC's ability to develop technologies capable of infusion into the Artemis program by safely introducing simultaneous simulation of temperature, pressure, and vibration while running fully operational test articles consuming hydrogen and oxygen. Currently, technologies are tested in separate facilities throughout the country. None combine all of these features, thereby increasing cost/schedule and risk during handling and logistics. ASEnTS is designed to be highly extensible, adaptable to customer demands over time. Extensions will include upgrading temperature control and support systems and upgrading the vacuum system, providing rapidly changing conditions, while adding a vibe table for broad spectrum testing.
The ASEnTS - gen1 project approach entails outfitting an available vacuum chamber with new components. First, the chamber will be integrated with sourced components. Then, the system will be integrated with the building 334 facility. Functional verifications will then be conducted through an Integrated Systems Test, simulating pressures equivalent to 60,000 ft and temperatures down to 50 F at an array of set points, holding steady state at each condition. Finally, as available, a customer’s hardware would be tested in the chamber.
ASEnTS seeks to address capabilities gaps in NASA & GRC's environmental testing portfolio, specifically simultaneous simulation of temperature, pressure, and vibration with fully operating test articles, targeting energy storage & conversion and power electronics in the near-term, to push those technologies forward to colonize the Moon and Mars by simulating the extreme conditions experienced during mission flight and, eventually, destination operations.
