Damped Cubesat

Description

Applying add on passive damping systems has no t (based on a literature search) been attempted in cubesat/smallsat design. If successful this proposal could contribute to that industry and alter the way cubesats/smallsats are designed. The major objective is to demonstrate through analysis and test the realized damping of the system and weight saving associated with the increase in damping. Currently, typical cubesats pursue vibration isolation systems which can be costly and in addition the design of which must be controlled by the cubesat rather than the launch vehicle. If successful, the design approach developed in this proposal can be applied to new smallsats, such as Solar Cruiser. It is also extensible to other structure looking to reduce dynamic response.

Benefits

Cubesats and smallsats respond to launch vehicle dynamic loads causing heavier structure and extreme test environments for on-board components. Add on passive damping will mitigate structural response, reducing required weight and minimize component dynamic loads. This project will show that typical smallsat and cubesat damping can be taken from around 1% to roughly 6%.
