Completed TRL 3 (started at 2, targeting 3)
This project will design a revolutionary new lightning imager that provides greater sensitivity than lightning detectors. As the basis of a new opto-mechanical subsystem, we plan to evaluate free-form reflective optics technology that offers a wide FOV in a small package. To enable bi-spectral observations using a single optical assembly, we will test the efficacy of incorporating a dichroic reflector in this new design. Upon completion of the first year, we will have a preliminary design of the opto-mechanical subsystem for the next-gen lightining imager that will be documented in a technical report. In the second year of the project, we will design the detector subsystem and publish test results. Upon project completion, we plan to propose to ESTO/Instrument Incubator in FY22Q3.

This is early/mid-stage (TRL 3) — the most realistic path in is NASA SBIR/STTR, which funds small businesses and research institutions to develop technology aligned with NASA's needs (equity-free, phased funding). Check whether a current SBIR/STTR solicitation topic overlaps with this project's technology area, or contact the project directly (above) to ask.
None of these are guaranteed paths for this specific project — TechPort itself doesn't have an "apply" button. Reaching out to the contact(s) above with a specific question is usually the fastest way to find out what's actually open.
