We will create a voice interaction capability for autonomous systems, that addresses foundational architecture and technology required for human-system communication. Specifically consider space systems that are self-contained and have limited computational resources. Develop an ICD (Interface Control Document), and implement a prototype that leverages the AES NASA Platform for Autonomous Systems (NPAS) project. We will define an architecture and technology for implementation of human-system voice interaction for an autonomous space system (Autonomous Voice Assistant – AVA). We intend to define the ICD to integrate AVA to autonomous space systems (i.e. systems that comprise a space habitat). Additionally, we will develop the infrastructure in NPAS that supports the AVA ICD. Lastly, this project seeks to implement a prototype AVA system for an autonomous space habitat module as per Gateway VSM ConOps and requirements.
User interfaces for space systems, such as ISS, have focused on screen designs using a mouse, or touch screens. Although ISS is a complex system, ground operations provide extensive awareness and control support. GAP: Complex autonomous systems planned for Artemis, i.e. gateway and surface habitats and exploration systems, will have very limited contact with ground, and will require more efficient crew interfaces with improved system awareness. A voice-controlled spacecraft system (VCSS) for awareness inquiries or collaborative human-robot tasks is a recent topic of interest for NASA (JSC). GOAL: The objective is to develop a core foundational technology for natural language interaction between crew and autonomous systems
