Novel Instrument Suite for Martian Environment

Description

The goal is to explore the threshold for the smallest sensor platform for Mars surface operations. A prototype sensor board will be designed, fabricated, and undergo accelerated thermal cycle environmental testing that simulates the thermal conditions over one Martian year in order to demonstrate critical function through the self-sustaining, low power autonomous sensor package.

Benefits

Low mass / power electrical systems designed to operate in extreme cold and daily thermal cycling for one Martian year is a novel application. Hybrid use of state-of-the-art beta-voltaic / Li-ion batteries and ultracapacitors will facilitate low power, cold operations. This could facilitate lower cost, Class-D science probes, ushering in a unique era of Mars exploration.
