The study will determine the capabilities of existing renewable sources at GRC, load demand profiles of GRC buildings, and energy storage needed to maintain demanded power. An analytical simulation will be developed and used to assess and compare possible designs (e.g., AC vs DC). It will conclude with a report that highlights design recommendations, potential benefits of the design to GRC, and key takeaways for lunar microgrids.
Microgrid models and designs produced in the course of this study will be used to address challenges associated with distributed energy resource systems as found on the lunar surface and in future terrestrial microgrid systems. Challenges include integration of dissimilar energy sources into a high reliability grid and microgrid power management and distribution. A report will be produced at the end of the study that will present the costs and benefits of the proposed GRC microgrid design, and will make recommendations for lunar surface microgrids.
