Description

Noise control treatments for aerospace application are scrutinized for weight implications. Improving noise treatment efficiencies improve aviation and space mission capability, reducing system level redesigns and safety risks. Rapid advances in materials and manufacturing are enabling the development of new treatments (e.g., acoustic metamaterials, aerogels, and ultralight foams) but have left a gap in the ability of NASA engineers and researchers to readily identify and select these materials for practical application. This project is an assessment of SOA noise control systems and their acoustic characteristics, culminating in the development of a material database. This database can be used by experts and nonexperts alike to make SOA design decisions early in a project schedule and reduce the chance of late stage retrofitting or redesign.

Benefits

This task is an assessment of state of the art noise control systems, culminating in the development of a material database. Well characterized materials and their model-based parameters are important when designing acoustic solutions for a large range of NASA projects including SLS vehicles, crewed spacecraft, urban air mobility, jet engine liners, electric propulsion aircraft, etc. This database has the potential to reach broadly across the agency assisting NASA acousticians in their decision making while benchmarking our current state of the art with industry and academia.
