Developing x-ray laboratory astrophysics capability with a portable miniature permanent magnet EBIT

Description

We propose to build a portable Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT) that will be used both on-site at GSFC as well as at US synchrotron light source facilities for laboratory astrophysics experiments. This will result in the deployment of a new capability and providing atomic data that are crucial for the science cases of x-ray astronomy missions such as XRISM, Athena, LEM, Arcus, and Lynx.

The portable EBIT will enable additional calibration and measurements of fundamental atomic data necessary to take full advantage of the next generation of space based X-ray spectrometers
