Orbiting Artificial Star for High Resolution Coronal Imaging from the ground

Description

Image the solar corona in the visible and NIR with unprecedented angular resolution (0.05 arcsec) in compared to 1-2 arcsec resolution state of the art (a factor of 20x40 times better). A successful demonstration will: 1) establish the technological feasibility of the ground system to perform such observations with a spacecraft. 2) reveal, for the first time, magnetically guided coronal fine structure that theory predicts is pervasive in the low corona.

Benefits

No existing space or ground observatories can conduct visible observations in fine resolution that is needed to support such ambitious science goals. Ground observatories are limited by atmosphere, space telescopes are limited by size and cost. CIF scope will bring Space and Ground assets (DKIST-ORCAS) to work together to achieve near diffraction limited observations of the solar corona.
