This study will evaluate an unexplored alternative process which could change the architecture for metal extraction and regolith processing for ISRU while leveraging prior GCD funding. Recently, trichloride ionic liquids (TCILs) have been developed which can safely store chlorine and dissolve various metals under mild conditions.
At the end of the CIF duration period, the activity will identify the functional elements of the technology, identify the basic engineering design approach to advance the technology, define the system architecture in term of basic functions to be performed, predict preliminary performance for functional elements, and identify critical functional experiments for operational environments.
