OWIS: Orbital Welding in Space

Description

The overall goal is to demonstrate a welding capability that could be used in space. The specific objectives are: •Design and modify the existing equipment for use in vacuum •Test the modified equipment in a bell jar with different metals and determine if shielding gasses are required and determine electrical parameters •Interface with NExIS to plan modifications for robotic operation

Benefits

The technology of orbital welding in space aligns with the goals of NASA's NExIS, OSAM, and Artemis missions. Future extended human presence on the Moon or Mars will also require the assembly or repair of fluid systems, for applications like In Situ Resource Utilization, thermal systems, fission systems, breathable air, or even waste - systems which are all in the current architectures.
