Hypersonic Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator Morphing Shape Guidance and Control Design

Description

The goal of the HIAD morphing shape guidance and control design project is to simulate and quantify the controllability of the morphing HIAD from the current early formulation stage to an analytical proof-of-concept stage by using in-the-loop aerodynamic models that correctly capture the asymmetric aerodynamics and their effect of vehicle dynamics, while also characterizing the vehicle performance of the ensuing human EDL system. By having in-the-loop modified Newtonian panel methods with the flight mechanics tool, this study will capture the nuances in aerodynamics due to deflection and reinflation of the tori during morphing, allow the design of a realistic controller for a morphing HIAD, and provide an improved quantification of the flight system performance. LaRC is the prime center in EDL and has developed the HIAD concept, which is the leading contender for human Mars EDL vehicles. The project will allow the maturation of an innovative control strategy for HIAD and quantify the system performance of the morphing HIAD design, potentially improving the capabilities of the EDL system and increasing chances for potential fusion into future human Mars or commercial missions that require a highly controllable HIAD. Since this project involves simulation and analysis, there are very few risks of delay, except for timely availability of high-demand personnel, but alternative personnel with similar skillset are available in the proposing team’s branch.

Benefits

By the end of project, a higher-fidelity integrated performance simulation will be created and the morphing HIAD system performance will be quantified for human-scale Mars missions. The results of this project will enable further maturation of the morphing HIAD concept in the scope of ground testing, flight testing, or incorporation within a commercial venture requiring a controllable HIAD. LaRC and NASA have devoted a large amount of resources to the development of HIAD, including the LOFTID flight test, and by not maturing the morphing HIAD design through improved simulation and controller design, the center could be ignoring a fruitful way to showcase improved HIAD performance and a pathway to easier integration into many different scenarios that require a controllable, low L/D vehicle.
