The goal of this project is to create a robust, modular environment for software integration to support the development of distributed systems missions, and beyond. This architecture will be used in all research and development stages, including rapid prototyping in simulation, and onboard in production systems. The architecture will be developed in parallel to the NASA open-source On-board Artificial Intelligence Research (OnAIR) platform in order to facilitate collaboration with the external organizations and the academic sector.
The architecture developed in this activity will be able to support many systems-based research project and missions, in a plug-and-play manner. The anticipated benefits will include enabling agile development for a fleet-based satellite mission concept, which can be adapted to fit various mission design concepts of differencing topologies and science objectives. Moreover, dues to its shadow development with NASA open-source technologies, we anticipate easy collaboration and contribution from academic researchers.

This is a mature technology (TRL 7) — the realistic path in is usually NASA's Technology Transfer Program: licensing an existing NASA patent, or a Space Act Agreement to use NASA facilities/expertise directly. NASA also runs a startup licensing program with no upfront fee for companies formed to commercialize a specific NASA technology.
