To implement an embedded flight computer, and flight software, that can be leveraged across multiple suborbital platforms. The WFFCM4 will be a generic system that can be re-configured for specific suborbital platforms and missions. The WFFCM4 will provide a single solution that will enable key capabilities desired across both sounding rocket and balloon platforms.
The WFFCM4 concept is part of, and will help to enable, avionics modernization efforts currently ongoing within both SRPO and BPO. The WFFCM4 will provide centralized command and control of distributed sub-systems. This will enable avionics architecture simplification. For example, a WFFCM4 controlling a principal power switching unit would eliminate multiple isolated battery packs on sounding rockets, reducing form-factor and mass. This would result in longer flights and enable new science opportunities.
