The Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) uses a data assimilation system that relies on the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) system for analyzing observations. This project aims to improve the representation of GEOS in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere by introducing SABER (TIMED mission) data. We will also port the SABER capabilities of this work into the next generation data assimilation system under development now, the Joint Effort for Data assimilation Integration (JEDI).
The aspirational goal of this project is to produce atmospheric background states up to the lower thermosphere (~110-120 km) that can be utilized by upcoming spaceflight mission opportunities, such as AWE and EZIE scheduled to be launched in late 2023 and 2024, respectively. Ultimately, this project will enable the inclusion of other heliophysics data in GEOS through follow-on efforts that will extend its capability to higher altitudes and enable its use in space weather applications.
