Completed TRL 3 (started at 1, targeting 3)
This project will establish a seed foundation for developing an end-to-end sample processing system capable of separating and concentrating a wide variety of soluble organic matter prior to chemical analysis, opening the door to new capabilities for liquid processing and sample handling. The proposed technology can be adapted to a variety of flight instrumentation, including gas chromatography, future separation systems such as liquid chromatography, as well as mass spectrometry or other chemical sensors on life detection missions to targets such as Mars, Europa, Enceladus, or Ceres.
At the completion of this project, we will report on the (1) complete extraction protocol that will drive the design requirements for our future instrument, (2) define the type/particle size/bed volume of the stationary phase, and (3) the pressures needed for optimum chromatography in space. The results from this project will allow the design of an integrated package of sample cups, purification columns, and fluidic lines.
