Solid State Electrolyte for Li Battery Technology

Description
The objective of the proposed research is to develop 3D solid-state electrolyte(SSE) technology with a power density >0.2 W/g. The strategy is to design, fabricate and electrochemically test 3D cell design. The fabrication technology developed in this project will aid GRC in advancing Lithium Ion Batteries (LIB) technology by developing new electrode and SSE materials to increase energy capacity and safety: 1) high Li ion conducting electrolyte based on sulfide chemistry, 2) Li metal anode technology and 3) high capacity/high voltage cathode materials. Lithium Ion Batteries with Li anode offer the highest theoretical capacity of all conventional battery types.
Benefits
Major advantages of solid-state electrolyte (SSE) technology over more conventional battery technologies include reduced mass and volume, enhanced system safety, reliability and flexibility, and lower power system life-cycle costs. Lithium Ion Batteries commercial potential is considerable as virtually all battery powered products in the commercial and military market demand greater energy capacity per unit mass and/or volume.
