Completed TRL 5 (started at 2, targeting 5)
This project will utilize adaptive control, deep learning computer vision and sensor fusion to develop a robust flight controls architecture that can precisely station keep behind a mothership aircraft. The architecture will be flight tested with the Model Shop using NASA Droid as the mothership and another UAS as trail aircraft. If successful, the TRL for this technology will be matured and enable a future flight test where a magnetic aerial capture will be demonstrated.
• Cutting-edge flight controls capability for NASA ARMD • Improved capability for NASA ESMD to collect long endurance airborne earth science • Atmospheric capture of space samples returns • High tempo planetary exploration using mothership and UAS concept

This is early/mid-stage (TRL 5) — the most realistic path in is NASA SBIR/STTR, which funds small businesses and research institutions to develop technology aligned with NASA's needs (equity-free, phased funding). Check whether a current SBIR/STTR solicitation topic overlaps with this project's technology area, or contact the project directly (above) to ask.
None of these are guaranteed paths for this specific project — TechPort itself doesn't have an "apply" button. Reaching out to the contact(s) above with a specific question is usually the fastest way to find out what's actually open.
