The purpose of this IRAD is to demonstrate the value of using augmented reality (AR) to assemble spacecraft mechanical structures. This will expand the use of inspection equipment needed for limited tooling assemblies allowing space flight hardware to be located and assembled in a 3-dimensional space. Incorporating direct digital manufacturing in transference from model to product in order to streamline assembly schedules and reduce assembly costs. The objective of this technology development is to provide the capability to assemble space flight structures such as RST, CCRS and DragonFly using direct digital manufacturing methods for locating honeycomb panels and other structural components in space for bonding/assembly operations
The innovation of implementing Augmented Reality into standard metrology practices will reduce tooling required for space craft assemblies and reduce time needed for final inspections as the inspection process is in-situ
