The primary objective of this project is to develop a prototype solar white wrap that meets typical performance requirements for wraps such as tensile strength, pliability, and durability while maintaining optical performance. The first step we will take to meet this objective is to procure several thermal control materials, such as aluminum-backed FEP and glass cloth, to use as ‘carriers’ for the solar white coating, and also to provide a metallic backing for improved IR performance.
A wrappable form would allow easy application of solar white to smaller-scale components, and to components with otherwise unsuitable surface finishes (e.g., plastics). Rolls of solar white could have a large width so as to more quickly cover larger items, such as second stage vehicles. Launchers could use several widths to simplify application to components of various sizes. Rolls of solar white tape could be carried into space to for making repairs.
