We aim to simplify the production of microgreens for ground studies and in space by developing a biodegradable plant growth substrate and hardware that does not require the input of water.
For ground-based experiments, this technology would enable swift turnarounds for testing, verification, and down selection of crop varieties. The hardware can also be easily incorporated into a random positioning machine (RPM) that could be set to simulate varying gravities and microgravity. Successful execution of the KPP would (1) Ensuring seed film technology and substrate induce microgreens true leaf emergence by 14 days of growth while RPM is in motion. (2) Observing germination success rates of at least 90% by enumerating non-germinated seeds. (3) Monitoring human pathogenic microbial loads to ensure Salmonella and E. coli remain at 0 CFU/g, while Coliforms and Staphylococcus aureus (Staph) are around 100 CFU/g.
