Commercial-Scale Arrays for Lunar Exploration: Communications and Sensing System
Completed
TRL 6 (started at 4, targeting 6)
Description
This SOW defines efforts to be performed by CesiumAstro for NASA Glenn to complete the integration of a second Ka-band tile for a frequency-division duplexed (FDD) active phased array system enabling lunar relay communications. The result of this effort is delivery of a single active phased array prototype, mechanical fixturing, and a concept design study to support the array and recommendations for electrical configuration. NASA will perform a test of the array following the period of performance. With additional investment, follow-on options are available to design and develop next-generation components of the full stack to support the lunar communications array.
Benefits
NASA application of this technology is broad and includes all missions that require Ka-band communications or signal processing. Current programs using this technology are NASA Ames' Starling and NASA Glenn’s SKOUT. Future NASA applications include communications link and radar ranging systems for lunar landers and space stations, dedicated communications link for lunar rovers and habitats, very-high-throughput communications for lunar communication relay satellites, and space situational awareness. Current opportunities include CLPS.
Missions include ground links, dedicated high-throughput communication links, and radar sensing payloads for orbital servicing and space situational awareness. UAVs are a target for technology transition, as SWaP is critical and a dual-function payload has direct application for communications and collision avoidance. Current opportunities include mission data downlink in EESS bands.

How to get involved
This is early/mid-stage (TRL 6) — the most realistic path in is NASA SBIR/STTR, which funds small businesses and research institutions to develop technology aligned with NASA's needs (equity-free, phased funding). Check whether a current SBIR/STTR solicitation topic overlaps with this project's technology area, or contact the project directly (above) to ask.
None of these are guaranteed paths for this specific project — TechPort itself doesn't have an "apply" button. Reaching out to the contact(s) above with a specific question is usually the fastest way to find out what's actually open.
