The Radiation-Tolerant Displays project aims to develop a reference design for a high performance, high availability display system that can withstand and mitigate the effects of deep space radiation. Currently, no display system exists that, by design, is capable of withstanding the harsh radiation environment of deep space. Radiation-Tolerant Displays seek to deliver on this through a collaboration across industry and agency and by building upon previous NASA efforts in this domain.
A fully developed display system architecture will be available for use across all deep-space missions, including Artemis and beyond to Mars, leveraging work from radiation-tolerant NASA-funded and SBIR projects. The display system will possess the ability to reliably provide pertinent information and data to the crew member when they need it, increasing crew safety and efficiency. The scalable and modular nature of the radiation tolerant display system, combined with intrinsic and by design radiation tolerance, makes it durable and easy to maintain, meaning lower mass for resupply missions (display replacements) which equates to lower cost and reduced crew time.
