Description

The O2O Ground Segment (O2OGS) enables the demonstration of Operational Utility of Optical Communications for Human Spaceflight by implementing an Optical Ground Segment compatible with the (O2O Flight Segment) at White Sands Complex, NM, and Table Mountain, CA. O2OGS integrates with the O2O Space Segment and O2O Operations Segment to meet O2O DTO Objectives.

The O2O DTO provides an optical communications service during the Artemis II mission. This service provides an alternate, high-speed communications channel to the Orion capsule that offloads the bandwidth-constrained S-band RF link from the DSN. This allows Orion to still download the significant volume of non-critical data collected during the 10-day mission and focus the use of RF link for mission critical data.
