Dynamic Targeting

Description
The proposed work will extend Steve Chien's NOS-T prototype projects (as part of AIST-QRS-19-0007 and AIST-QRS-21-0001). Although it is the continuation of previous work, because those efforts were part of AIST-18 JPL Task Plan, this new "augmentation" will be recorded as a new task under the AIST-21 JPL Task Plan. This effort will mature dynamic targeting concepts, algorithms, and software to enable future missions to more effectively capture science data. Specifically, this effort will have three thrusts outlined below. o Scheduling: Enhancement and maturation of online instrument targeting and reconfiguration algorithms. This will be in the form of generic families of algorithms for combinations of recurring problem subtypes based on: pointing, consumable resources (e.g., energy, data volume), and setup times. o Use cases: We will study dynamic targeting use cases in: Planetary Boundary Layer, Storms and severe weather, and Cloud avoidance. Use case studies will include investigation of potential instruments and science phenomena. The primary use case will be PBL, for which we will develop datasets to evaluate the impact of dynamic targeting. As a stretch goal we will evaluate a second use case using existing datasets, to the extent permitted by resources. o Detection strategies: We will study lookahead sensor detectability for plausible wide swath sensors. Wide swath lookahead sensors can detect events of interest that can be dynamically targeted by trailing sensors that have higher resolutions or complementary sensing modes, enabling new science observing strategies. To the extent that resources allow, we will study "use cases" from the above efforts including evaluation on datasets.
