QGG Tech Demonstration

This proposal is a follow-on effort to a current, JPL-led study directed by NASA ESTO on the topic of a Quantum Gravity Gradiometer Technology Pathfinder Demonstration. The current study, jointly conducted with NASA/GSFC, UT Austin, and in collaboration with a DLR/Airbus team, investigated and established a framework for a pathfinder demonstration, including performance targets, relevance to future science, development of two reference instrument concepts, and assessments of feasibility. In spring of 2023, the study team was directed to focus on the higher performance instrument concept based on ultracold atom technology. Most recently, the team has continued refinement of this instrument concept, including funding initial studies by US industry vendors with technology and capability to develop key instrument subsystems. As the current study is planned to conclude in January 2024, this proposal focuses on activities in FY24 that will serve to bridge between the study efforts to date and the framework required to align and organize activities for a flight demonstration.

Increase scientific understanding of natural phenomena using remote sensing.

This is early/mid-stage (TRL 3) — the most realistic path in is NASA SBIR/STTR, which funds small businesses and research institutions to develop technology aligned with NASA's needs (equity-free, phased funding).
