Event-Driven and Rapid-Readout Hybrid CMOS Detectors for X-ray Astronomy

We propose to further develop event-driven, fast-frame-rate X-ray hybrid CMOS detectors for use in X-ray astronomy, as a continuation of our detector development program that first brought these novel detectors into existence. Under our current/ending grant we have developed and fabricated a new type of silicon imaging detector, along with a novel read out integrated circuit that is bonded to the detector, and we have tested and characterized the new devices. This detector is capable of fast effective readout rates by performing readout on only those pixels with measurable signal above a threshold. Here we propose to enhance the design and development of these detectors, which could potentially be the optimum choice for many future X-ray missions with focused optics and/or large effective area. This proposal supports NASA's goals of technical advancement of technologies suitable for future missions and training of graduate students.
Benefits
The Astrophysics Research and Analysis program (APRA) supports suborbital and suborbital-class investigations, development of detectors and supporting technology, laboratory astrophysics, and limited ground-based observing. Basic research proposals in these areas are solicited for investigations that are relevant to NASA's programs in astronomy and astrophysics, including the entire range of photons, gravitational waves, and particle astrophysics. The emphasis of this solicitation is on technologies and investigations that advance NASA astrophysics missions and goals.
